A few people close by that must have been watching more than we thought actually applauded and a few others looked like we shouldn’t be acting like this in a public place.
One of the employees came over to see what the yelling was about as Kev & Favil convinced Chris that they should just leave before they got kicked out and he reluctantly complied.
“Is there a problem here?” Said a very pierced guy with a Big Tease lanyard around his neck.
Marci shook her head and looked like she was doing everything she could to hold back tears.
I said, “That guy verbally accosted her, but it looks like he’s been convinced to leave by his more intelligent friends.” I leaned forward to the guy and whispered to him, “Ex-boyfriend.”
He nodded. “Verbally accosted, eh?” Marci wiped her eyes quickly, trying to avoid notice. “Look, if anyone tries to bother you, let one of us know and we can take care of it before it gets out of hand, ok?”
“Sure, thanks.” I nodded.
Marci, still looking down at the racks, sniffed and nodded as well.
The guy could have been a dick and asked us to leave as well, but he was surprisingly supportive.
You certainly can’t judge someone just because they looked like they’d stepped off a death metal tour bus.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he was a vegan and championed against animal cruelty.
With that in mind, I bought a really cheap green t-shirt that I liked that had a photo of the Earth made out of peas with the slogan, “Support World Peas” on the front and “Give Peas a Chance” on the back.
Marci also bought a t-shirt that was all black and covered with little hearts and skulls.
I still had all of the cash, so I paid for both shirts.
By sheer coincidence, our checkout clerk was the same guy.
“My girlfriend has this same shirt and she loves it.” The guy said as he folded up Marci’s selection.
“She’ll wear anything black with hearts and skulls. That’s her favorite style.” I said pulling out a twenty.
He leaned in towards us and pointed at the adult curtained section near the counter. “You know there’s some really cute heart and skull lingerie in the adult zone. It’s all 50% off today too.”
“You want to see if there’s anything you like?” I asked Marci.
“Really?” Marci sounded intrigued.
“They don’t have a sale like this every day and this money isn’t going to spend itself!”
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” Marci said and before I knew it she was already through the curtain into the forbidden zone.
“I can set these aside for you?” He asked offering if I wanted to go back there with her.
He obviously thought we were boyfriend/girlfriend.
“I would, but I’m not eighteen yet.” I said, referring to the sign that said “No one under 18 allowed!”
He nodded. “Good man, good man. I never would have known. We’d have had to check your ID if you were buying any smoking stuff or pipes though. We can get a huge fine if we’re caught selling that stuff to minors.”
“I read you. We’re not into that kind of stuff anyway. Marci used to smoke cigarettes about two years ago, but she stopped, thank God!”
I chatted with him for a few minutes while browsing through the trinkets on the counter and he started talking about sexy garments that his girlfriend liked and maybe mine would too.
I never once corrected him or implied that Marci was my sister.
Luckily the other clerk, a girl very gothically oriented with black lipstick, white makeup, and green streaks in her hair was able to take on the other customers until Marci finally came out holding onto a lacy pair of black panties and matching bra along with a silky black negligee.
